Electrical devices such as TV, VGA, stereo, low voltage power supplies, computers, monitors
and power strips with surge protection all have a tendency to fdump` electrical noise on the power lines as broad band frequencies.
When noise is placed on the power lines it can attenuate, corrupt and/or block the signals being transmitted or received over the entire house.
Typically noise will cause intermittent operation of the receivers.
An example would be if you can turn on a light from a transmitter but cannot turn it off from the transmitter or you
can turn off a receiver but cannot turn it on. You may have a transmitter and a receiver seemingly only a few feet
apart and not be able to get signal through because of power line noise being broadcast by a device all the way on the other side of the house or in the same room.
The offending device does not even have to be turned on, because a TV or computer
still has their power supplies on the power line when they are turned off.
• This is the perfect and essential device for all X10 installers

In single phase installations, the unit can be used for amplifying the signals. In this case two of the three phase wires are not connected. Easy to install inside the electrical box, the Signal Repeater is connected in parallel with any selected device on each of the phases.
• Couples X10 signals across phases
• Repeats the signal to normal power
Where ever the X-10 Signal Repeater is located, the Signal Repeater will pick up the signal and re-transmit on the other phases and repeat on the same phase.
No more than one Signal Repeater is allowed in a system. When FD10 phase couple / filters are installed, the K terminals should NOT be used to prevent feedback of signals in the system.

Some X10 home control installations can be affected by 'noisy' devices, where a light or appliance injects interference that is of a similar frequency to the X10 signal. This interference can result in reduced reliability from the X10 system. The majority of X10 installations do not have this problem and any that do are normally only affected by a single noisy appliance.
Typical interference sources are lights and appliances that do not dispose of their own generated noise, some known offenders are some (not all) compact fluorescent lights, LCD/Plasma monitors and computer screens. Normally, interference generated by normal household devices do not pose a problem due to the special dynamic filtering techniques used by the X10 system. However, a particularly bad device may affect your X10 system but you can isolate the interference simply by plugging the device into the FM10 filter.

Filtering:
Interference that reduces the range of your X10 home control system can sometimes come into your home from the incoming electricity supply. The FD10 suppresses this interference, thus increasing the range and reliability of your system. It also stops the unlikely chance of your neighbour's X10 system turning on and off your lights!
Coupling:
If you have X10 home control receivers on multiple phases, the signals will not be able to get from one to the other. In this case you'll need a 3-phase coupler. The FD10 has the ability to couple X10 signals across phases, you'll need one FD10 per phase. The FD10 is a passive coupler, meaning that it simply allows the signal to pass through onto the other phases.

The internal relay can be tripped either by external latched or momentary action wall switches or by an X-10 controller. The lamp module has a soft-start (when turned on, the module will gradually brighten the light from 0 up to the last dim level. When turned off, the reverse occurs.)
